What's the worst book you've ever read?
Well, it may not be the worst book I've ever read, but it popped immediately into my mind as one of the worst:
The First Apostle written by A James Becker. It really really stinks. It follows a Davinci Code type plot (which by the way is not one of the best books ever either). The worst part about the book is that the author feels compelled (Or was he paid?) to place brand names for laptops and cellular phones throughout the book. Me thinks he was paid.
It was trite, banal and just commercialized. I'm learning not to buy books at the supermarket.
The holidays are in full effect, so tell us: What's your favorite holiday song? Bonus points if you share it with us!
I Love love love Christmas. So, of course, I love Christmas Music. I think a few years ago I posted my Favorite song as "Oh Holy Night" but I have to admit this year, thinking about it, it's really different. I'm enamored with "Go tell it on the Mountain"
Go, tell it on the mountain,
While shepherds kept their watching
Over the hills and everywhere
Go, tell it on the mountain,
That Jesus Christ is born.
o’er silent flocks by night,
Behold, throughout the heavens
There shone a holy li--ght
Refrain
The shepherds feared and trembled,
When lo! above the earth,
Rang out the angels chorus
That hailed our Savior's bi--rth.
Refrain
Down in a lowly manger
The humble Christ was born
And God sent us salvation
That blessed Christmas mo--rn.
RefrainInterestingly this song, considered a "christian Spiritual song" Has had many positions beyond the Holiday season. It was used by Fannie Lou Hamer, during the 1960's Civil Rights Movement in America. Because of the style of the song multple lyrics have been added or subtracted to suit the needs of the singers.SO bonus points, 2 Versions! Enjoy and Happy Holidays!
And Bob Marley and the Wailers.
Are you prepared in case of a natural disaster? What do your plan and preparations include?
oh crap no...
yes, i live in Florida, it's the Lightening capitol of the US. We also regularly have hurricanes.
I don't even have one working flashlight. No extra food....nothing...
But lucky for me hurricane season is pretty much almost over, some rain from Ida and then the dry season will come on full force.
What is the scariest incident with drugs or alcohol you’ve witnessed or personally experienced? How did it change you?
Sponsored by MTV's "Gone Too Far." Tune into the series premiere this Monday at 10 p.m. EST.
Ok so being an Emergency nurse, I probably shouldn't answer this.
How's about one DAY, not night, using Naxloxone on a Mother, Grandmother and Kid all from the same family, all overdosed on Herion which they had been doing together.
I was pretty jaded by the time this came around. I could tell story after story of people who have really ruined their lives via Drugs/Alcohol.
But it looks like MTV is going to make some money doing it instead, and call it "entertainment"
What's the last movie you saw in the theater? Rented?
I Honestly do not remember. But I believe it was the Older Harry Potter film in 2007 when I was in New Hampshire.
Maybe.
I have not rented a film in years, but I did recently watch The long run on Hulu.com
perhaps, I need to go to the theatre more. I dont think there is one in this town.
What's the best thing about today?
OMG, I was soooo meaning to post this anyway and it is now a QOTD.
The best thing about this day in February is that at this time last year, I had two horribly mangled fingers. Those fingers seemed to change the course of my life forever...and while I am not entirely thrilled with the changes the fingers brought about, the best thing about today is that they are indeed no longer broken, they function reasonably well, and if you don't look too closely you cant tell I broke them. I will never be a hand model, but it wasn't a particular goal of mine anyway.
What's the best book you read this year?
Colin Cotterill's
Set in Laos, a 77 yr old Surgeon, who is somehow connected to powerful Shamans from the past, becomes the country's only Coroner. Cotterill describes beautifully Post-Communist era Laos, the intracacies of life in Laos and does a great job with a bang up mystery. The real proof of this book's "goodness" is that both my Mom and Dad also loved it, as did the Doctor frined I gifted it to later this year. It sounds funky, but in the end Cotterill pulls it together to give it appeal to the masses. There are 4 books in the series. I swear you won't be disappointed!!!When did you really get to make a difference for someone else?

This is an interesting question. I could certainly post up about my exploits overseas....but I've done that.
Or even that I raised some money this year for the Race for the Cure, but several of you donated, so you know this...
But Yesterday I got an opportunity to make a big difference in an instant. Someone had left their wallet in a shopping cart outside of the local grocery. I automatically picked it up, and walked it inside, giving it to the manager to call the owner. I figured at Christmas-time, no one wants the hassle of a lost wallet. The Manager looked in it and noted that there was quite a bit of cash. He asked if I wanted to leave my name with the wallet. I asked himwhy, and he said, well, you know, so they can thank you. I snorted. I told him to just get it back to them. While it may not be as "Big" as some of the other things I've done, I'm proud of it. It didn't require any planning, and it was completely spontaneous.
What's your alma mater?
Submitted by Lies.
Got several in fact.
Let see.
Westtown School for High school. Long live the exciting Brown and White colors of Westtown.
University of Rochester, in NY for a degree in History...
A unique school where your Freshman grades simply don't count. They are not reported on the transcript. it's only reported if you got a failing grade. Meliora means "All thats Best" University of Rochester was defintiely the best for me. I enjoyed my time there, and while I am certainly not a historian, I learned how to think well, research well and write well while there.
Oregon State University for a Degree in Museum Studies and Recreation Resources.
Home of the Beavers, and a pretty bad football team. I enjoyed my time here, took up rock climbing, crazy gym workouts and hiking. Also got my first dog!!!
Unversity of NC at Greensboro for my Nursing Degree, when I realized that being in Recreation resources just doens't pay the bills...and I was not getting married to a rich feller...
UNC is a pretty no-frills place. But the professors (at least in Nursing and Biology) were solid. I learned a lot and of course still use that education everyday...
Lest anyone should wonder, I paid for everything myself after my first Undergrad Degree which my parents helped me with. Beyond that, all that education was and is still being paid for by me....(Though I'm almost done with my Nursing loan!
What are some ways you save money?
Submitted by Pixiemom.
I am a real cheapskate in a lot of ways.
I got to movies at Mid day, rather than during the evening.
I fill up my car (this is mostly for summer) in the morning because apparently due to the coolness you can get more gas in the car...(Wish I could remember who told me this and why I think it is true.)
I use the Library for books for the most part.
I hoard pennies, which is not really helping me save money, but eventually I roll the pennies and put them in the bank. So far in the past 5 weeks, I seem to have found about 5.00 in change...when it gets to the bank, that will be some "free money"
More useful ways:
I dump spare money into inaccessible places like 2 year CD's (Yay I have one that matures in July!), known stocks, and my IRA.
I pay my bills on time and avoid late fees.
I do not use Credit Cards.
I try to cook at home, bring my lunch to work...
One thing specific to my profession:I buy three pairs of scrubs for work at the 9.00 price. These are the plain navy blue shirts and tops. I do not buy the scrubs with weird dancing angels, ranibows or sports teams that cost 30.00 each. I figure someone is bound to vomit, pee, poo or bleed on my scrubs so why pay a lot of cash for them. I look cute enough in the navy blues not to worry about it. Plus I seem to be taken more seriously.
THe only thing I can not save cash on is SHOES. specifically running shoes. Occasionally I am able to get the outgoing model on sale and I will actually buy 3 pairs at a time especially if I am afraid they will do what Mizuno has done lately....make their shoe wider those dastardly bunch.
